OK, we all knew Facebook was big. And getting bigger by the day. But I don’t think we ever really expected to see it grow so big so quickly. Facebook has just reached the 500 million member mark. That’s up by about 100 million in just a few months.  If Facebook were a country it would rank as the world’s third-largest, behind China and India, and ahead of the United States. That’s mind-boggling.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg celebrated the milestone by announcing the launch of Facebook Stories — a site dedicated to users’ stories about Facebook. It makes for some good, inspirational reading (and an equally good amount of time-sucking from your work day.)

Of course, no event like this would be complete without someone creating a flashy infographic. The one to the left was compiled by Facebakers, and it shows some great stats (including some choice nuggets about Australia). Just click on the image to see it in all its full-size, purple-hued glory. Enjoy.
